If you’re looking for inspiration, the self-help section is at the back of the bookstore. Why, you may ask? Let’s face it: most people will not be caught dead in public with a book about how to feel better. If you’re not happy already, everyone you know, along with every stranger exposed to your jeremiads, will avoid you like the plague. You will die in the company of a hundred cats. That’s if you’re lucky enough to have animal companions to attract public health authorities so they discover your rotting corpse. Hence, we would all rather tuck a book about a serial killer turned duck-hunting maverick under one arm than admit that we need anything tuned up.

This is where I come in. I won’t even try to make you feel better. Instead, I will encourage you to expect the worst out of life, and feel sensible doing so.
