Francis Bacon, 1st Viscount Saint Alban was an English philosopher, statesman, scientist, lawyer, jurist, author and pioneer of the scientific method, eventually becoming Lord Chancellor of England. Despite an active political career, Bacon was also heavily involved in science and writing, becoming one of the first scientists to use the scientific method. As it would turn out, Bacon was probably killed by his own experiment. While working with snow to try to keep a fowl refrigerated, he contracted pneumonia. Before his death, Bacon wrote the New Atlantis, a utopian novel that lays out Bacons ideal society and is heavily influenced by his science. The novel gives Bacons vision of a future society in which "generosity and enlightenment, dignity and splendour, piety and public spirit" are the characteristics of each member of society, and Salomons House is a college of science and learning, much like todays research universities.
