He makes an emergency landing at the Natchez Bridge and meets a colony of pigeons living under the bridge, who helps him in his time of need. The reader will admire Cheramie's determination and willingness to sacrifice to help others, at great risk to himself, carrying on the tradition of bravery displayed by his ancestor Cher-Amie.
