Although Somalia is slowly rebuilding after years of devastating conflict, it suffers regular bombing and assaults claimed by the violent extremist group al-Shabaab; which is responsible for killing innocent civilians and children. Al-Shabaab were driven out of Mogadishu in 2011 but still control swathes of territory from where they plan and launch frequent, deadly strikes against government and civilian targets – such as the fatal truck bomb explosion in Mogadishu in 2019, killing at least 76 people – including many innocent university students, police officers and injuring dozens more. Al-Shabaab was also responsible for the deadliest single attack in the country’s history, in 2017, when a truck bomb exploded next to a fuel tanker in Mogadishu, creating a fire-storm which killed nearly 600 people. And recently, in March 2021, ten people have been killed after a rickshaw loaded with explosives was detonated by al-Shabaab Islamists at a popular restaurant in Mogadishu. “The blast was very heavy and caused massive destruction and civilian casualties, the operation is still going on to establish the exact number of casualties but initial information security officials obtained indicates more than 10 people died,” said Mohamed Osman, a security officer. The medical official said 20 people were confirmed dead and 30 others wounded. The US, regional allies and the Somalis have struggled to find an effective strategy to counter al-Shabaab, which emerged almost 15 years ago. An intensified counter-terrorism campaign has killed senior commanders and disrupted the group’s activities but not made a major strategic impact, according to analysts. Hence it is imperative that global anti-terrorist cooperation is improved in Somalia – with the assistance of the International Community – to restore rule of law, peace and prosperity in this beautiful region; so that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) can be upheld in Somalia. It should also be noted, that the Somali government, headed by Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed (known as Farmaajo), is no longer recognised by two of the five states and there is no clear election plan. The International Community has ignored signs so far, that tension and democratic deficit were rising in Somalia and has indulged the Farmaajo administration. Therefore it is very important that elections are held in Somalia as soon as possible; so that democracy and rule of law can be ensured in the Federal Republic of Somalia.
