A Few Stray Thoughts upon Shakespeare
Excerpt from A Few Stray Thoughts Upon Shakespeare: A Paper Read at a Meeting of the Members of the Clapham Athenaeum, on Monday, May 30th, 1864
It was the custom in some of the early Greek colonies for any person who proposed a change in the law to do so, with a bowstring round his neck: in these. days any person unknown to fame, who ventures to write about Shakespeare, if not exposed to equal risk, at least is liable to the charge of being rash or intrusive. These pages were prepared for the amusement of a few friends and neighbours, in the midst of important and responsible avocations, and make no pretensions beyond those which the Title-page expresses. The original paper, somewhat enlarged, ) appears in this form, at the suggestion of friends who may have been too partial critics; it is hoped unknown readers will not be less indulgent.
