The thin tale of “progress” is shrinking more and more as many messages from all over our planet converge in the realization that both the physical and the man-made environment are constantly downgrading. The case of Venice functions as a super-symptom of a more general cultural collapse. Living in the Serenissima, I was captured by the menacing image of the sinking city and tried to photograph it going to its watery grave, and, at the same time, to record feelings, fantasies and thoughts in view of the possible(?) destruction. At this critical turning point of our internationalized world, this book may be regarded also as a hybrid elegy (text and photographs) for the imminent loss of one of the most important achievements of humankind and as a prelude to the vulnerability of our world.

At the same time, the book material (photography and text) in its particular graphic version aim to initiate a dialog between writing and the photographic image, that is, to explore expressive interconnections and their mutual negation. In this way the book honors the artistic and architectural heritage of the city of the Doges and it also aspires to touch upon the grand points of the cultural march in the present and mainly in the future—without ignoring the limits of every contemplative and artistic endeavor.

Il mito sfatato del «progresso» rimpicciolisce sempre di più, poiché molti messaggi da tutto il mondo convergono sulla consapevolezza che l'ambiente naturale e quello creato dal genere umano è in costante degradazione. Il caso di Venezia funziona come un super-sintomo di un crollo culturale più generale. Vivendo alla Serenissima, ero preso dall'immagine minacciosa della città sommersa e ho cercato di fotografarla nella sua tomba umida e allo stesso tempo di registrare emozioni, fantasie e pensieri in vista di una possibile catastrofe. In questo momento particolarmente critico del nostro mondo internazionalizzato, il libro può essere considerato sia come un'elegia ibrida (testo e fotografie) per la perdita imminente di una delle più importanti realizzazioni dell'umanità, sia come un preludio al destino vulnerabile dell'universo.

Nel medesimo tempo il materiale del libro (fotografie e testo), in una versione grafica particolare, mira a stabilire un dialogo tra la scrittura e l'immagine fotografica, cioè ad esplorare le convergenze espressive e le esclusioni reciproche. In questo modo il libro rende omaggio al patrimonio artistico e architettonico della città dei Dogi e al tempo stesso aspira a tocchare le grandi questioni del presente e soprattutto del futuro - senza sottovalutare i limiti di ogni esperienza artistica e riflessione contemplativa.

Ο ισχνός μύθος της "προόδου" συρρικνώνεται όλο και πιο πολύ καθώς από πολλά μηνύματα απ' όλο τον πλανήτη μας συγκλίνουν στη διαπίστωση ότι το φυσικό και το ανθρωπογενές περιβάλλον συνεχώς υποβαθμίζεται. Η περίπτωση της Βενετίας λειτουργεί ως υπερ-σύμπτωμα μιας γενικότερης πολιτισμικής καθίζησης. Ζώντας στην Γαληνότατη είχα καταληφθεί από την απειλητική εικόνα της βυθισμένης πόλης και προσπάθησα να την φωτογραφίσω στον υγρό τάφο της και ταυτόχρονα να καταγράψω συναισθήματα, φαντασιώσεις και σκέψεις εν όψει της πιθανής καταστροφής. Σ' αυτήν την κρίσιμη καμπή του διεθνοποιημένου κόσμου μας, το βιβλίο μπορεί να θεωρηθεί και ως υβριδική ελεγεία(κείμενο και φωτογραφίες) για την επικείμενη(?) απώλεια ενός από τα πιο σημαντικά επιτεύγματα της ανθρωπότητας και ως προανάκρουσμα για την ευάλωτη τύχη της οικουμένης.

El magro mito del “progreso” va menguándose cada vez más, puesto que muchos mensajes de todo nuestro planeta vienen cincidiendo en que nuestro entorno, natural o creado por los humanos, va degradándose. El caso de Venecia funciona como un super-síntoma de una precipitación cultural generalizada. Cuando vivía en la Serenísima me sentía poseído por la imagen amenazadora de la ciudad hundida y traté de fotografiarla, y a la vez registrar emociones, fantasias e reflexiones con cara a la probable catástrofe. En este punto de inflexion de nuestro mundo globalizado, el libro puede ser visto también como una elegía híbrida (libro y fotos) a la inminente (?) pérdida de uno de los mayoros logros de la humanidad así como un preludio a la vulnerable suerte del planeta.

Παράλληλα το υλικό του βιβλίου (φωτογραφίες και κείμενο) σε μια ιδιότυπη γραφιστική εκδοχή στοχεύει να εγκαταστήσει έναν διάλογο ανάμεσα στη γραφή και την φωτογραφική εικόνα, δηλαδή να εξερευνήσει τις εκφραστικές συμπλέξεις και τους αμοιβαίους αποκλεισμούς τους. Μ΄αυτόν τον τρόπο το βιβλίο αποτίνει τιμή στην καλλιτεχνική και αρχιτεκτονική κληρονομιά της πόλης των Δόγηδων και την ίδια στιγμή φιλοδοξεί να αγγίξει τα μεγάλα της πολιτιστικής πορείας στο παρόν και κυρίως στο μέλλον-χωρίς ωστόσο να αγνοεί τα όρια κάθε στοχαστικού και καλλιτεχνικού εγχειρήματος.

El material del libro (fotos y texto), en su version gráfica muy sui generis, aspira paralelamente a establecer un diálogo entre el arte de escribir y el arte fotográfico, es decir explorar sus conjunciones expresivas y sus exclusiones mutuas. Así, el libro rinde un homenaje al legado cultural y arquitectónico de la ciudad de los dogos aspirando acercarse a la vez a sus grandes logros de su trayectoria cultural en el presente y, sobre todo, en el futuro –pero sin ignorar los límites de todo proyecto intelectual y artístico.
