VPNs are a secure and affordable way for companies to transmit proprietary information over the Internet. With new implementations of two protocols, IPSec and MPLS, VPNs are about to become standard operating procedure in corporate networks. They're already a standard service offering from telecom providers. Readers can find high-level information about VPNs, or IPSec, or MPLS, but implementation advice is hard to come by. Building a VPN without it is like trying to construct a bicycle by learning about seats and wheels--good info, but it doesn't really help you assemble the product and take it for a spin.
