The major naval powers: Britain, America, Russia and Japan have all played a part in the theatre of war at sea over the last one hundred years. This book is a detailed study of the bloody and tragic battles that took place and of the shifting pattern in the status of the naval powers and its effect on our history today.
In 1905, when this book begins, there occupied in the Far East the first major engagement between ironclad fleets, the Battle of Tsu-Shima which decided the outcome of the Russo-Japanese war in Japan's favour. What follows are mighty sea battles which took place in our century, graphically constructed for the reader. Victories, defeats and mutinies at sea, from the Pacific to the Indian Ocean, are all recorded in sometimes, horrific detail. This is a moving memory, as our century draws to a close, of battles that we shall never see the like of again.
