Excerpt from Monsieur Alphonse: A Play in Three Acts; Adapted and Augmented
Scene. - The interior of a country house near the sea. Beyond is a garden and a conservatory, the entrance to which is at C. by a flight of steps. To the R. is a library, to the L. is the door of entrance.
The curtain rises to the music of an old sea song. Remy enters with a naval coat, which he is brushing. Advances down stairs from conservatory, singing.
"Oh, oh, my messmates now we'll sing
The glories of Neptune, the ocean king,
And the fun that's had on the O - O - shun "
Remy. Admiring the coat.] Laid up on the stocks a whole year, and just as trim as ever Brushes.] Clean as a holystoned deck arter a dryin' sun. Ah How often I've seed this coat marchin' back'ard and for'ard on the quarter, an' him as was inside - it brave and cool when every other mother's son of us was up to the taffrails in fear o' the comin' squall. And so he's off agin to-morrow Folds coat at L. table.] And I ain't The first voyage old Remy has let him go alone - and that's what I got to thank the rheumatix for Ah Shakes his head, and brushes off a speck from the folded coat.]
Manon and Bonette enter up the steps at back; they peer curiously in.
Hello Who's them? Strange craft; not in our service They huddle closely together, whispering; then look at Rem. and curtsey.] Well What's in the wind, folks? Bon. pushes her mother to speak.]
Bonette. R., both curtseying.] We must be in the right place Speak to him, mother
Manon. Timid and simple.] Please sir, who are you?
Rem. L., imitating curtsey.] Who am I? That's not bad from a boarding party dropping on your own deck Who am I? I think I might ax who are you?
Bon. Of course you might, sir - truly. We mean no offence, sir - truly.
